Guide to Beyond Island

  KOH MAK

Lying between Koh Chang and Koh Kood (Koh Kut), about 40 kms. from the mainland is a group of 9 islands called the Moo Koh Mak (Ko Maak). Only 4 of these islands, including Koh Mak, Koh Kradad, Koh Kham and Koh Rayang Nok are occupied. Koh Mak with an area of only 16 sq. km. and a 27 kms coastline is the third largest island of the Marine Park. Unlikely to Koh Chnag, It has a flat terrain with plenty of coconut and rubber plantations. The main attractions are the long beaches and clear seawaters. There are only a few hundred people living here, most of them related.

  • SERVICES: Transportation to Koh Mak is more convenient than Koh Kood as there is a boat service to the island everyday. Daily fishing boat service departs from Laem Ngob pier at 03.00 pm. (one trip per day) and returns from Koh Mak at 08.00 am (one trip per day). It spends 3 hours to Koh Mak. All boat takes on at Ao Nid Pier at the East of the island. The fare costs 210 Baht per person. Speed boat is available at Laem Sok pier, operated by Siriwaitaya Service. The boats depart from Trat at 11.00 am and depart from Koh Mak at 01.30 pm. For your one-day trip from Koh Chang, contact the boats at Bangbao village. The boats leave Bangbao at 9.30 am . And return from Koh Mak at 5.00 pm. every day.

    To go around Koh Mak, the travelers can rent a bike (120 Baht per day) or a motorbike (350 Baht per day) from the resorts. ACCOMMODATION: There are about 10 resorts mostly situated at the northwest or southwest of the island. Almost all the resorts are sold on full board packages with sightseeing trips and transportation. In case of going to the island without accommodation reservation, you can bargain a resort. at Ao Nid pier. The resorts park their cars waiting to pick up a guest at the pier to their resorts.


  KOH RANG

To the west of Koh Mak is a group of 12 islands known as the Moo Koh Rang. Of these, Koh Rang Yai is the largest. It is covered with tropical virgin rainforests and boast of the longest and most beautiful beach in the area, the Had San Chao or San Chao Beach, where the sand is powdery white and water crystal clear. Divers can enjoy its scenic underwater beauty up to 25 meters deep.

Natural Park office is located at Ao Bor on the island so the travelers can tent around this area. Be noted that there is no restaurant, no bungalow, no road; because Koh Rang is inhabited. The travelers have to prepare everything themselves. In the other way, Koh Rang could be the paradise for camping to get close to the raw nature, instead of civilization.

There is only few and short sandy beach on Koh Rang. Yet the importance of the island is the virgin coral coast, of which attracts a lot of travelers to prove. It is said that it has the most beautiful coral reef and the most variety of coral among Moo Koh Chang.

To take a trip to Koh Rang you should contact the tour agencies on Koh Chang. It is more convenient and cheaper to join a group, if you are not a big group (minimum 10 people). The snorkeling trip to Moo Koh Rang – Koh Rang and the other 3 island, spends a full day from 08.30 am – 05.00 pm. It costs 900 Baht per person including equipment and a lunch box.

  KOH KHAM

Just 1 km. northwest of Koh Mak is Koh Kham, a small island with clear seawater, coral reefs and coconut-fringed sandy beaches that are excellent for swimming, snorkeling, fishing and angling for squids. Aged lava exists on the island which proves the existence of a volcano in prehistoric times. Big boulders believed to be volcano rocks are seen on its pristine beaches. During low tide a sand dune surface that links the island to Koh Mak and you can walk across to Ko Mak.

Some trip package to Koh Rang will take you to snorkel at Koh Kham. There is no accommodation, restaurant, natural park office nor any service on the island. It is just a visiting site.
