Guide to Beyond Island

A group of 24 islands in the south of Koh Chang was designated as the Koh Kood sub-district in 1990. These include the main island of Koh Kood, 9 islands of Koh Mak and 12 islands of Koh Rang. Koh Kood Sub-district has a very small population of less than 2,000. About 70% of the population is on Koh Kood while the rest live on Koh Mak. Almost all other islands are uninhabited. Fishing and agriculture are the main occupations. Despite of the large number of around islands, there are bungalows and resort only on Koh Kood, Koh Mak and Koh Laoya. The others are traveling site for snorkeling and diving. The journey to the islands can be arranged on Koh Chang at any tour representative.

  KOH KOOD

Situated 80 kms southeast of the provincial capital of Trat, Koh Kood is the farthest island from the mainland. It is also the easternmost island of Thailand bordering Cambodia. With an area of 129 sq. kms Koh Kood is the second largest island of the Koh Chang Marine National Park and the fourth largest in Thailand, after Koh Samui.

To visit Koh Kood, there are 3 piers to pick you up from the Trat mainland. The first pier is Laem Ngob pier on Trat mainland where is the meeting point for the resort on Koh Kood and their guests. The package will include the speedboat transfer from Dan Kao But the independent travelers can hire a private boat or join a trip with fisherman boat as well. Boats from the piers in Laem Ngob take about 3-4 hours to reach Koh Kood. Speedboats take one or two hours slightly over.

Klong Son pier or Kallpangha pier is the second pier which belongs to a private operator. The customers have to hire a private boat and the boats land at Ao Yaikerd, where Koh Kut resort located. Advance reservation is required (call 01-502-9861, 01-627-7777). The last pier is Siriwaitaya pier at Laem Sok District. Speed boat service to Koh Kood daily departs at 11.00 am and back from the island at 01.00 pm.

However, the best solution to stay on Koh Kood is to buy a package from a resort. Most of the resorts sell packages which include speed boat transfer from Trat, accommodation, meal, snorkeling and activities.

Be noticed that the traveling time of Koh Kood is only 7 months (November – May) and is closed for 5 months during monsoon season (June – October). Also the journey to the island has to be checked carefully with the climate before departure.

  Beach

Located at the west of Koh Kood, Had Ao Prao is a one – kilometer beach with the lines of coconut trees. The longest beach on the island, it’s also the residential area of local fishermen. The beach is good enough for swimming even though tourists like to come here for sunset watch or shopping for small items from a small local shop.

  Ao Tapao Beach

Perhaps the best beach in Koh Kood is Ao Tapao. Lying on the west of the island, the beach has powdery sand with the backdrop of coconut trees.

  Yai Koed Beach

For those who like basking in the sun in seclusion, Had Yai Koed could be the answer. Mixed with stones and fine white sand, this 800 meters long beach can be accessed by boat only. Indeed, what makes this beach unique is a resort whose bungalows stick out to the sea.

  Klong Chao Beach

Cut through by a canal, Klong Chao Beach is a quiet beach. The slightly sloppy beach is safe for swimming. But if you are bored with swimming in the sea water, you can try taking a dip in the fresh water basin of Klong Chao Waterfall. Although with only a single tier, Klong Chao Waterfall is considered the most beautiful on Koh Kood, cascading into a large pool providing tourists a welcome spot for some freshwater swimming. It is tucked away in the jungle and can be reached by boat from this beach. Many island visitors choose to kayak through a lush mangrove forest and trek for another 15 minutes to get to the waterfall.

   Klong Yai Ki Baech

Still on the island’s western coast, Klong Yai Ki Bay seems more striking than other bays and beaches on Koh Kood. A visit to Klong Yai Ki Bay puts tourists among some wonderful scenery and sandy-white, clean beaches, including Koh Raed, a small island close-by, plus a chance to visit Klong Yai Ki Waterfall.

    Activities
  • SERVICES: Koh Kood is supported by essential infrastructures, which include a hospital, schools, police station, electricity (mainly for state-run facilities), and water and telephone system. Fuel and solar energy are the main sources of electricity here. Most resorts generate their own electricity.

Walk from Tapao Bay to Ban Klong Mat, and nearby bays and inlets, an area considered the center of Koh Kood because of the facilities offered such as the sub district office, hospital and police station. All are located not far from Tapao beach and close to Klong Hin Dam pier.

Before heading out you may want to pack a few essentials such as imperishable instant foods, sunhat, sandals, sun block, insect repellent lotion and balm, seasickness pills and a basic first aid kit. And don't forget to bring enough money – there are no banks on the island.
  • SHOPPING: As the island is not developed, there is no commercial and convenient store. All you need can be brought at your resorts only. Thus, to bring your needed belonging you are precaution.
  • ENTERTAINMENT: Surely, your holiday will be entertained by nature activities (swimming, kayaking, snorkeling at the resorts and waterfall visit) held by your resort according to the package. Klong Chao waterfall and Klong Yai Ki waterfall and Klong Chao mangrove are famous attractions.
  • RESTAURANTS: The package includes all meal during your stay. Thus do not worry about your meal. Additionally, it is not easy to go out from your resort (the road is not convenient nor find a restaurant on Koh Kood). The resort will be your everything.
  • ACCOMMODATION: Bungalows and resorts are scattered on almost beaches on Koh Kood. Unlikely to Koh Chang where the resorts are lined along the beach and the road, there are only several accommodation for each beach.
